Babies and toddlers perceive when someone close to them is missing, especially their mothers, and need reassurance that their Mummy will be back. They have not yet developed language to be able to ask questions about where their Mummy is, and as a result, they get upset and confused when they can’t see Mummy anywhere and do not know where she is or when she will be back.
To help your baby, toddler or young child develop understanding about where their Mummy is, practice asking questions by copying the above videos, and giving them answers.
When signing about other people, when you sign “WHERE”?, look around and then have your face lighten up when you find what you are looking for.
Don’t forget to give a questioning look when asking, “MUMMY WHERE?” and delighted expression on your face when you sign, “ME MUMMY!”
For the word, “at”, you will see that a pointing finger is being used. You can point to show the direction or place where the object is (e.g. school).
Review these sentences which you have learnt until you are able to sign the sentences without any pauses in between. After you have signed them over a few times, the signs themselves should become familiar and flow smoothly and cohesively. Ask your friend to give you feedback on areas to improve, especially your facial expressions when you ask a question or make a statement, and whether you are signing the signs correctly.
